Back in Sydney
Sydney Central station isn’t a particularly grand place to come ‘home’ to, but the latent familiarity of the exact place I departed on the Indian Pacific all those weeks ago was almost surreal.
A more aesthetic homecoming would have been on a grand ship sailing up Sydney harbour past the opera house and under the bridge, but the direct ferry from Tasmania to Sydney was full.
So I crossed back on the overnight ship to Melbourne and bundled myself into the corner of a Sydney-bound train. Not feeling quite up to the 11 hour ride after my night on the sea, I plumped for a stop in the inland city of Albury on the banks of the Murray River, which forms most of the border bettwen the states of New South Wales and Victoria. A world away from the mountains of Tasmania, I happened upon the Enchanted River festival; one of those genuine local arts events well below the radar of international tourists.
Pictures of Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road are abound in the gallery. Tasmania and Albury to come.
